The co-tutelle (joint supervision of doctoral dissertation) allows PhD students enrolled in research doctorates to undertake a joint thesis project at a partner university. This involves alternating research periods between the two institutions, with a minimum stay of six months at the host university, under the supervision of two advisors—one from each institution.
The program culminates in a single final examination, after which a double or joint PhD degree, recognized in both countries, is awarded. The required period abroad must be completed within the legal duration of the doctoral program.
A specific agreement between the Rectors of the participating universities, approved by the relevant departmental teaching staff, activates the co-supervision. This agreement also certifies the availability of necessary financial resources.
PhD students receiving scholarships can apply to the Ufficio Dottorato (PhD Office) for an additional scholarship to cover expenses during their research period abroad.
Furthermore, students undertaking co-supervised theses with French or German universities may be eligible for funding from the Italo-French University (specifically the Vinci Call) and the Italo-German University.
