Practical information

Public transport

The local bus company is called TRAIN Spa. Bus tickets can be bought at tobacconists’, newsagents’ and from ticket machines. Those who use the buses every day can save money by buying a three-month season ticket. You will need to show your certificate of enrolment at the University when you apply for a season ticket.

Fiscal code

Your fiscal code identifies you in your relationships with institutions and public administrations. It is therefore required when opening a bank account, drawing up a contract for employment or rent, or buying a SIM card.

Your fiscal code is only valid if issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate in Viale Europa n.67/6 (tel. 0577 56121, fax. 0577 561204, e-mail: [email protected]). There is also an office in the centre of town, near Piazza del Campo:
Via Banchi di Sotto, 52 (Palazzo Piccolomini)
Opening hours:
Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday: also 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Bank services

Opening a bank account in Italy may be fairly costly: it is advisable to visit several banks and check whether they offer good terms for international mobility students with regard to expenses to keep an account or costs related to its closure etc. Opening a bank account does not usually involve any expenditure, while sometimes closing does. For this reason, check costs for closing the account before choosing where to open it.

A savings book (libretto di risparmio) costs less than a normal bank account and allows you to receive bank transfers from abroad, but does not entitle you to a cashpoint card.

Banks are usually open from Monday to Friday, from approximately 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Post offices

You must have the following documents to open a bank account:

  • ID card or passport;
  • Fiscal Code;
  • Permesso di Soggiorno (temporary residence permit for non-EU citizens);
  • Enrolment certificate or other declaration issued by the University of Siena.

The Siena central post office is located in Piazza Matteotti 37 and is open Mon-Sat from 8.15 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The other post offices in town are open only in the morning from 8.15 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. (Mon-Fri) and on Saturdays from 8.15 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
