Learning objectives

The course introduces the fundamental concepts of economics. It focuses on the discipline
of economics as an instrument to understand life and historical changes. In the first part
the course offers a broad overview of fundamental economic concepts and, in the second
part, the attention will be dedicated to different forms of market and firms’ behaviour in
partial equilibrium.

Contents

The following topics will be presented during the course:
- The historical evolution of capitalism: events and thoughts
- The three dimensions of political economy: competition, power and change
- The variety of contemporary institutional capitalism systems
- The neo-classical theory of production
- Costs minimization and profit maximization
- Market structures
