In the course of histology the characteristics of the main tissues (epithelial, connective, cartilaginous, Bony, nervous and muscular) will be described. These notions are preparatory to the comprehension of the structure and function of the various organs. The anatomy and physiology courses will illustrate the structure and function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and nervous system. Aspects related to the anatomy of oral cavity and related structures (skull and jaw bones, facial and masticatory muscles, teeth, periodontal, vascularization and innervation of oral cavity and teeth) will be treated in detail. The course of physiology deals with the sensory and motor aspects of the stomatognatic apparatus. Particular topics will be: 1) mechanoceptive, nociceptive and thermocective sensitivity in the oral and intraoral territories and in the pulpodentinal complex. 2) Taste and smell 3) Kinesiology and neural control of mastication, trigeminal reflexes, control of mandibular posture, swallowing, lingual movements. Anatomy and physiology of the salivary glands.
