The contents of the course will be mainly theoretical. Within the classical theories, students will study the formal categories of montage (Ejzenstejn), the principle of cinecamera’s mobile gaze (Vertov), the factors which distinguish film images from reality (Arnheim), photogénie (Delluc, Epstein) and cinégénie (russian formalists) and films as visible culture (Balàzs); within the modern theories, students will be introduced to the reproduction of the cinematographic device (Bazin), the structures of the imaginary (Morin), the aesthetic of tailing (Zavattini), the specific and non-specific codes (Metz), the written language of reality (Pasolini), temporal and spatial articulations (Burch), the “third meaning” (Barthes) and the image as a way of thinking about the world (Deleuze).
